An auto transport broker arranges transportation. A motor carrier physically transports the vehicle. Those are different regulated roles, and understanding the distinction helps you verify authority, read the contract correctly, and know who is responsible for each part of the shipment.
A broker connects a shipper's request with an independent authorized motor carrier. The broker gathers shipment information, evaluates carrier fit, arranges the transportation transaction, communicates order details, and can help coordinate updates or exceptions.

A broker may communicate with the customer and carrier, but that does not make the broker the physical transporter. Review the broker agreement, carrier information, bill of lading, and any incorporated terms so the parties' roles are clear.
Search the company's legal name, USDOT number, or MC number in FMCSA systems and confirm that the authority matches the service being offered. A broker should have broker authority; a for-hire motor carrier should have the appropriate motor-carrier authority. Names, numbers, address, and contact information should match the documents you receive.
Be cautious when a website hides its legal name or authority, claims to own every truck without evidence, pressures you to pay through an unusual method, or refuses to identify whether it is a broker or carrier. Keep copies of the quote, order confirmation, terms, carrier information, bill of lading, payment record, and condition photographs.
